KILLER WHALE BORN TODAY

January 7, 2010 by DanDecker

Babykillerwhale1.7.10

It’s a whale! Takara, an 18-year-old, 5,080-pound killer whale, gave birth to a calf today in the main pool of SeaWorld San Antonio’s Shamu Theater. The calf arrived at approximately 7:15 a.m. after a short period of labor.

This is an exciting event for our team members and our guests, but the first days and weeks for a young killer whale are critical. SeaWorld’s Zoological Operations will be monitoring Takara and her calf round-the-clock, watching for nursing behavior, regular respirations and other positive vital signs.

We will keep you posted on the progress.

Super exciting to get this news so fresh off the presses! Takara is a great mom (as she has proven with Kohana and Trua), she should be fine with this little one.

    Congratulations from the chilly Netherlands!

Congrats to everyone. I feel sorry for the person doing night watches on these next few, cold San Antonio nights. Hang in there!

  28. Brit says:

um, killer whales haven’t been taken out of the wild in over a decade…and these two whales were born in captivity…and it would be stupid to let them free because NONE of them know how on earth to catch a fish by themselves…so think before you speak.

  29. Gretchen T. says:

    Congratulations

  30. lizj says:

the whales can’t make it in the wild they have couldn’t survie and the whales are treated and taken care of amazingly by the seaworld staff

How cute a baby Killer whale was born at the San Antonio’s Sea World park, I love to see pictures of baby Killer whales exspecially takara’s baby.

  40. Saddie says:

I had a feeling she was pregnant! And I am excited that she was! I cannot wait to see the new baby. This is very exciting! It’s so tiny! :)

  41. Ems says:

Omg congrats Tiki!! I wanna know when more news will be up, me and all of my friends want to know the gender, and if we could submit names for the baby. I think the name Ohana would be beautiful (for a girl of course) it means family in hawaiin and it makes perfect sense, since the whale is 1 of 3 calves, and has a full sister, Kohana

  42. Ems says:

p.s ^^i knew she was pregnant the minute she stopped doing stuff involving arching or using her belly lol.

  43. Ashley says:

I am so happy Takara has given birth to her new calf. I’ve been awaiting its arrival since it was revealed she was pregnant. The calf is so cute, and I hope it will live for many years. As for those who are yelling free all the orcas from captivity, you are being very unrealistic. No wild orcas have been captured for a very long time, and these two orcas were born in captivity. They don’t know life beyond what they know, and the wild-caught orcas have been in captivity for far too long to be safely released. Even orcas who have been in captivity for a few years are difficult to release.

It happened Christmas Eve – very sad – it will change EVERYTHING for yeas to come. Keto (the second born to Kalina in 1995 Male) was the whale involved in the accident. I hate to say this – with no adult whale suvervison of the youngsters Loro Parque in Tenerif was an accident waiting to happen.

When did Tickie get moved to San Antanio??? Why haven’t the SWSD people been informed of this??? I was there for Takara’s birth and her first baby’s birth in SD and am happy she is closer than Flordia now :) She is my favorite whale!!!! Did her second born get left in FL? I hope Koho her first baby is doing ok in Teneriff after the tragity….. Sending prayers to all involved. I still think mom’s and baby’s should stay together for life just like in the wild – birng Tickie, Koho, Trua back to San Diego!!!! :)
