America Recycles and at SeaWorld San Antonio, So Do We!

November 15 marks the annual America Recycles Day, which brings awareness to importance of reducing our nation’s waste. According to the Houston Chronicle, America Recycles Day got its start thanks to Texas Recycles Day back in 1994.

Recycling goes beyond simply tossing our used drink bottles into big blue containers. It’s a mindset that private and corporate citizens adopt to find ways of reducing their use of resources and finding new uses for items typically meant for landfills – or worse, in the habitats and waterways occupied by our planet’s precious animals.

At SeaWorld, we have been actively involved in corporate recycling programs for 20 years. We recycle everything from office paper and scrap metal to food grease and computers. Last year, the San Antonio Business Journal honored the SeaWoeld San Antonio park with its Going Green Award in the Conservation Category. Not only do we recycle as a company, but SeaWorld has a recycling facility for our team members so they can contribute personally.

Every where you look around the San Antonio park, you can find recycling of some sort. The pools at Journey to Atlantis contain 400,000 gallons of water, which is completely cleaned and recycled every 4 hours. Plus, we use condensation gathered from our air conditioners to fill the entry fountain and to irrigate our landscaping.

Through our recycling efforts, SeaWorld aims to inspire others to do their part in recycling and caring for our environment, so the SWBG Conservation Fund established the Environmental Excellence Awards - recognizing schools and non-profit groups that are involved in conservation projects. One of the winning projects from 2010 was entitled “Turning Grease Into Fuel.” If your school or non-profit group has a project that you’d like to enter for the awards, the deadline is December 1 and you can find details here.

It may seem like a small act, but recycling is big way to be a good steward of the world we share.
