SeaWorld is taking animal and human interaction to a whole new level.
Some feathered friends, including brightly hued macaws (like the one pictured) and sun conures, will be joining the cast and crew.
Picture yourself seated at the park’s 3,000-seat Beluga Stadium. Gaze toward the stage and watch as the beautiful new scenic elements, lighting, a cast of 22 high divers, synchronized swimmers, aerialists, bungee artists, animal trainers in colorful new costumes, and of course the real stars of the show, acrobatic Pacific white-sided dolphins and graceful beluga whales present a mystical atmosphere.
Now close your eyes for a brief moment and let your ears fill with the original music and enhanced sounds. All of this comes together to bring you, “Azul: Lure of the Sea.”
Dan Decker, the park’s executive vice president and general manager, tells us that, “Our lively new spectacle focuses on a curious ‘tourist’ who is transported to a land of strange and mystical air, land and sea creatures. “Azul” will introduce the tourist to the audience in a comical pre-show routine, so it’s important not to miss anything.”
The whole family is sure to enjoy “Azul” time and time again. This amazing show is set to premier on Friday, March 12. Don’t miss out on being some of the first to see the show. Make sure to tell us what you think about “Azul” after the premier on our Facebook fan page.

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Bar-B-Que Cook-Off is taking place at SeaWorld San Antonio this year! Wow, try saying that three times fast!
The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has been putting on the Bar-B-Que Cook-Off for 14 years and has raised over $96 million for the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Scholarship Fund. This event has become a huge attraction that requires the perfect venue. SeaWorld has just that and more with one of the largest parking lots in San Antonio, a great facility and a strong enthusiastic team to help make this event better than ever!
The planning for this event is a huge undertaking with over 250 teams in the competition and SeaWorld even has a team participating in the event. These cooks and teams really get into their barbecue!
The team members at SeaWorld are a proud bunch, and through our partnership with the Rodeo, wanted to give more by showing off the park. We decided to open the Main Entrance Plaza, a few gift shops, Dolphin Cove area (where guests can feed, observe and even touch a dolphin), Sharks/The Coral Reef, and Seaside Landing for Bar-B-Que Cook-Off visitors to enjoy. There may even be some random visits from various animals throughout the day.
Shamu mingles with a team participating in the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Bar-B-Que Cook-Off
That’s not all! There will be a concert held at the park’s Celebration Cove featuring Tracy Lawrence as the headliner. This is a great outdoor venue to see a concert and relax under the stars!
I personally plan on fasting for about a week before the event if the food we sampled recently is any indication of what is coming. I am ready to eat more, lots more! I hope to see you all here!
Don’t miss this great event on Saturday, January 30 from 10 a.m. to midnight. Admission for adults is $12. Children ages 12 and under are free. Active military are free with military ID. Pre-sale tickets are available for $8 at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo box office.

In 2008 we brought the holidays back to SeaWorld San Antonio. After all who doesn’t love a great event, especially at Christmas time? As we continue to grow our events we are always looking for another reason to throw a party!
One thing we haven’t done before that will become another great SeaWorld tradition is a New Year’s Eve party. Since SeaWorld is the place for families to visit and create memories the park thought it would put on an incredible event for our guests of all ages to enjoy! The park wanted an event specifically for families with younger children and when discussions began about New Years, we quickly decided it was something the park had to do.
As we worked on the plans for the event we wanted to focus on the little ones which is why SeaWorld San Antonio’s New Year’s Eve Twilight Party will be celebrated at 8:00 p.m. complete with a countdown and an extraordinary fireworks show choreographed to fun and moving music.
In addition to our world class shows the San Antonio Fire Department will be at the park with a giant fire truck and Sparky the dog during the afternoon, and the San Antonio Police will be at the park with a police car and will be providing parents with child ID kits! As it gets dark our gift shops will have a ton of great New Year’s Eve glow products that are sure to be fun and festive, and our Chefs are putting on an incredible reservation only dinner with VIP seating for the fireworks.
In order to keep the party going, the park is open with our Christmas Celebration through Jan. 3, 2010, and yes, your Fun Cards and annual passes are good through Jan. 3. I hope lots of families come out to enjoy our first annual New Year’s Eve Twilight Party and make it a fun and safe tradition for many years to come! I can’t wait!

- Christmas list mailed to Santa…Check.
- Christmas gifts for friends and family…Check and check, thank you Black Friday and Cyber Monday!
- Second annual holiday trip to “SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration” with friends… Man-o-man, I still need to plan my trip to SeaWorld this weekend!
One would think since I work at the park I would have already had this planned out. Well, time to get started.
So, first things first… Time for the park map!

First stop is to take a picture at the park’s Main Entrance in front of the giant Christmas tree. Next stop, the all-new “A Sesame Street Christmas” at Nautilus Amphitheater to see Cookie Monster, Elmo and friends, then over to Shamu Theater! I just love “Shamu Christmas…Miracles,” it always helps me celebrate the holiday season as a time filled with hope and peace and just possibly, miracles. Okay, then it will be time for some thrills on the roller coasters. Sea Lion Stadium is next on the list for “Deck the Halls with Clyde and Seamore,” those two zany sea lions get me every time! We will need to warm up a bit at Sea Star Theater which features The Polar Express™ 4-D Experience, I heard it’s a great show with all the 4-D effects including the scent of hot chocolate. By this time we’ll be pretty hungry, so over to Mango Joe’s Café Olé to eat and listen to SeaWorld’s Holiday Singers. The rest of the day will be spent over at FantaSea, the all-new walk-through where Shamu Claus and friends are preparing for Christmas the SeaWorld way and to get our picture with Santa at Seaside Landing, his home away from home. Oh, and we can’t forget to go and see the Underwater Santa too at Sharks/The Coral Reef!
We are going to have a really busy but fun-filled day. I am excited to be a guest in the park and have a blast taking in all of the beautiful decorations, shows and photo opportunities. Interested in coming to see the holiday splendor too? The park is open through Jan. 3 with varying operating days so you have plenty of time to gather the family and come and check out the festivities!

When I first heard that Jack was coming to SeaWorld San Antonio, honestly, I was a bit confused. I’ve been reading about and seeing Jack all over town during October because of our Howl-O-Scream festivities. That’s when I asked fellow blogger Suzy what all the fuss was about.
Me: “Wait, wasn’t Jack already here?”
Suzy: “No, not Jack our resident party pumpkin. Jack Hanna the star of ‘Into the Wild!’”
Me: “Whoa, cool! Is he bringing animals with him?”
Suzy: “He sure is, and he’s even doing some shows!”
Me: “Well, are you going to go see him?”
Suzy: “Of course! It’s Jungle Jack!”
After getting all the details from Suzy, I found out that Jack will be at the park’s Nautilus Amphitheater for live animal shows on Saturday, November 7th and Sunday, November 8th.
Plus, I just heard about this Jack Hanna sleepover on Friday, November 6th where children pre-kindergarten through 8th grade will get the chance to see Jack and some of his animal friends.
I know that I’m gonna take the time to come out and see Jungle Jack in action, what about you?

What an amazingly fun week we’ve had here at the park. Our Environmental Heath and Safety Department put on a week worth of events for our team members to take part in. I wanted to share with you a little of the behind-the-scenes action that took place at SeaWorld San Antonio’s EHS Week, because everyone knows that all work and no play makes us a bit dull around the edges.
Monday kicked off the week with Bring Your Child to work day. The kids had a good time and took part in activities with our Education & Conservation Dept. then spent the afternoon hanging out with their parents.
Tuesday followed with Bring Your Dog to Work, and let me tell ya there were some cute ones! They participated in the doggie wellness walk around the park and then gathered at Ports-of-Call for a dog trick contest, costume contest and best in show judged by Dan Decker.

Wednesday was our Road Clean-Up where a group of us hit the streets of Ellison Drive and Military Drive surrounding the park and picked up trash and recyclables, can you believe we found an old mattress!

Thursday was our Halloween costume contest and there was some pretty good competition out there, the winner is still trying to find her dog, do you know where it’s at?

Today we had our inaugural Vice President’s Relay Race in conjunction with the Wellness Fair. The relay was a blast. It included nine legs; a one-mile run, an over 30 one-mile run, a one-mile run in costume, Journey to Atlantis stair climb, power walk and word search challenge, hula hoop, jump rope, egg toss and spelling bee.
All the participants enjoyed the week and it definitely was a fun way to keep our SeaWorld family in high spirits as the operating season begins to wind down.
Keep an eye out on our Flickr feed next week for more photos!

UPDATED: Our first hunt was last week and was won by Baroli from Twitter. Our second hunt is now underway – good luck!
It seems like everyone these days has a GPS-enabled device of some kind and I am always looking for ways to incorporate modern technology into my scare toolkit.
My minions and I have cooked up a trick-AND-treat game for you using GPS. It isn’t an easy game but it is an adventure and adventures are not meant to be easy.
If you should be brave and smart enough to meet my challenge, here is what you need to do:
- Use a Firefox or Flock Browser, or Internet Explorer browser
- Install the Add-On ClickableNow, this is a great little application that makes Twitter backgrounds clickable, it will even work for your background
- Head to my Twitter page and find the hidden link
- Click on the link to find my hidden page
- Enter the password: jackreturns
- Use a GPS-enabled device to find the coordinates given. If you don’t have a stand-alone, GPS-enabled device, you might try Blackstar for GPS-enabled Blackberry phones or Geocaching 2.0 for iPhone 3G
- When you find the treasure, Tweet me @jackreturns or go to our Facebook page and leave a wall post or leave a comment on this blog post so that I know you found it.
- Bring the secret ticket to SeaWorld Guest Relations to claim your prize. Guest relations is at the front of the park.
Rules:
- Don’t destroy any property searching for my stash, it will be in plain view and not buried.
- If you can’t find it, get a new set of glasses.
- You cannot be an employee or immediate relative of a SeaWorld San Antonio employee.
- No pumpkins allowed.
- You can only win once outside the park and once inside the park, give someone else a chance.
If you want to learn more about Geocaching and its rules and regulations, check out the San Antonio Geocaching Association. Jack’s Treasure Hunt affiliated in any way with SAGA or www.geochaching.com, nor do they have any information or knowledge about my trasure hunt. We were heavily inspired by this fun and entertaining activity, so if you have fun with it, check it out. I might even consider becoming a geocacher during my time in the pumpkin patch.

A few weekends ago, I was up at the Central Texas Kid’s Expo in Belton, TX, with some fellow team members spreading the word about what’s going on at SeaWorld this fall. When we go to events like this, most everyone knows about SeaWorld (although some are surprised when we say we’re from San Antonio), but I’m always surprised when they don’t know about all of the Education programs we offer. I’ve had this conversation many times:
Me: Howdy! How’s it goin’?
Passerby: Doin’ well. Oh we love SeaWorld! We have season passes.
Me: Great! We’ve got Howl-O-Scream coming up at the park, have you ever been to that?
Passerby: Oh no, but we heard about it. It looks pretty cool.
Me: It’s a blast. We have stuff for younger kids during the day, then it gets scarier at night. You can even spend the night at SeaWorld.
Passerby: Wow. I didn’t know you could do that. What would you think about spending the night at SeaWorld, Johnny?
So, just in case you didn’t know…
You can spend the night at SeaWorld for Halloween. We’re doing a Howl-O-Scream Sleepover October 24th. Children 3-5 years old must be accompanied by a parent and 1st-8th graders come by themselves.
We do special Halloween activities along with seeing all of the creepy things happening in the park, like “Shamu’s Rockin’ Creep Show,” “Jack’s Frightmare Forest,” and much more. Plus, learn about many of the animals that live at SeaWorld. Then we’ll sleep in our sleeping bags in the Sharks/Coral Reef Exhibit. The kids definitely have the option not to participate in certain features if they get too scared, but there’s something for everyone throughout the night.
Guests enjoying Sharks/The Coral Reef before drifting off to sleep.
Now that you know about our Adventure Camp programs in October, I’ll give you a little hint: If you’re at the website checking out the camps, also check out the Jack Hanna Sleepover coming up Nov. 6. I’ll give you more details on that one later, but it’s definitely one you won’t want to miss.
Thanks and Gig ‘em,
Jack

The scares and screams at SeaWorld San Antonio started on September 30th when we hosted the Team Member Preview Night of Howl-O-Scream . Like any other program or product, we like our team members to preview what it is our park guests will be experiencing so we offer them first take.
Team Members not only enjoyed old “haunts” like Jack’s Frightmare Forest but also our very new maze called Den of the Departed. “Which maze was scarier?” Was the question of the night and team members seemed to be tied with their votes. Not only was the night a great first dress rehearsal for the Entertainment Department, it was the perfect opportunity for our team members to enjoy our Howl-O-Scream Program with their loved ones.
In addition to the Howl-O-Scream activities we also had a dunk booth, face painting, caricatures and snacks available with all proceeds benefiting the United Way . It was also a great night to kick-off our FREE flu shots for team members. Although you couldn’t be faint hearted because the representatives working the flu shot table were outfitted with blood splattered doctor’s coats to fit the Halloween theme! With over 200 flu shots administered and many guests in attendance we know everyone had a blast!
Preview night wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our World Class Service Team. The World Class Service Team is made up of full-time and part-time team members who coordinate and work team member events throughout the year. The team now starts planning the Christmas Celebration Preview Party on November 19th. Let the fun begin!
