Sakari, the newest member of our Shamu family in San Antonio, turned one year old today, January 7, 2011. Guests joined us for her celebration as Sakari, her mother Takara, and another female named Unna received birthday cakes made of frozen jello and whipped cream after shows this past weekend.

Sakari, meaning “sweet,” is the newest addition to our killer whale family. Born to Takara on January 7, this little girl is growing and learning by leaps and bounds every day.

Recently Sakari has begun to explore her heightened sense of curiosity. Though she is still nursing, her mom has been sharing fish and Sakari has been playing with them quite frequently.

Thirteen years ago, I visited Sea World San Antonio with a close friend. We entered the White Whale and Dolphin Stadium where a trainer was observing the animals in the front pool. “You have my dream job!” I said after introducing myself. “What do I need to do to become a trainer?”
