A look across the Water Ski Lake at the decks below Mango Joe'sJust across from Alligator Alley is another hidden spot at SeaWorld San Antonio. There are about half a dozen decks that extend over Water Ski Lake by Mango Joe's Café. These partially covered patios provide a great place for outdoor eating from either Mango Joe's Café or the Sea Star Market. During the summers it's a great place to catch a different view of the Ski show, or you can feed the different species of fish in the lake and look for cormorants, herons or egrets along the shore.
Water Ski Lake is man-made and actually has a concrete bottom. It averages 8-10 ft. deep, but in certain spots (usually designated by a buoy) it can reach 16-18 ft. It spans 12 acres and holds 22 million gallons of fresh water. We can even use some of that water for irrigation in the park and spraying down the paths to keep them clean.
When the lake was first built and the park opened, we didn't stock it with any of the fish you see there today or even plant many of the plants that are there. They arrived through natural means. Plant seeds traveled through the wind or were dropped by birds flying overhead. The fish arrived in a similar way. When birds landed in other bodies of water, either to bathe or to eat, fish eggs probably stuck to their feet or their feathers. When the birds then flew to Water Ski Lake, those eggs fell off here and developed. You'll now find bluegill, Texas cichlids, mosquito fish, red shiners and golden shiners. It's amazing the way nature works, isn't it?
Let me know if there are other places or animals in the park you'd like to know more about.
Thanks and Gig 'em,
Jack
