2011 marks the 15th year of the Bar-B-Que Cook-off, and the second year that the event is being held here at SeaWorld San Antonio. If you haven’t been to this event it is a must see! We are the world’s largest marine park and we were still in awe of the size and creativity involved in this event. There are teams from all over the country that move in (literally) for a week and set up everything from small 40’x40’ basic cooking areas to what can be considered small cities!
Here at SeaWorld we love getting involved with the community and especially with good causes. The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has raised over 105 million, yes million dollars for San Antonio Livestock Exposition Scholarship Fund and educational purposes. S.A.L.E, as they are often known contributes this money to education. This amount represents scholarships, grants, endowments, junior livestock auctions, Calf Scramble program, and show premiums paid to the youth of Texas.
The planning for this event was much easier going into our second year. SeaWorld and the Cook-off committee met and talked all year about how we can make the event even better. This year we have over 266 teams competing and expect more visitors to the event as it establishes itself at our park. Almost every department at SeaWorld gets involved with this event and we have a great time doing it! We even have our own cooking team called "Shamu's Tail Kickin' BBQ".
Just as we did last year, we will open a section of SeaWorld for visitors to explore free of charge. Beginning at 4:00pm visitors will be able to visit Dolphin Cove, Sharks and Coral Reef, some of our Culinary and Merchandise areas and the main concert will be held at Celebration Cove. This year’s talent is amazing once again! Aaron Watson will be the hit the main stage around 8:00pm, and The Bellamy Brothers Band will be on at 10:00pm! (If I mentioned Britney Spears here would you hold it against me?) During the day we have moved the free food tent, marketplace and live music into our main entrance plaza of the park. Just look for the giant arches with Shamu and you will find it. This plaza space really allows a social gathering place for food, drink and fun!
