Meet the Aquaticans: WaeWae

As we celebrate Aquatica's grand opening, we'll be introducing you to the characters of Aquatica. These characters are imagined identities of the real animals of Aquatica, from stingrays and kookaburras to spoonbills and lizards. As you learn more about these characters, it's our hope that you come to appreciate the species they represent. Their look and names are inspired by the Maori culture - a culture that has inspired many elements of Aquatica.

This is WaeWae, and WaeWae is a true “Beach Bum!”

WaeWae enjoys relaxing on the beach, soaking up the scenes and sounds as well as letting the water be a backdrop for other experience (sunbathing, eating, reading, relaxing). WaeWae also really likes people-watching!

WaeWae (pronounced “why-why”) means legs or feet. WaeWae is a flightless bird (not specified) similar to the Kiwi. WaeWae feels right at home at Aquatica because of the long stretches of sandy beaches with plenty of open spots to relax, the park’s come-as-you-are sensibility and the constant melody of gently crashing waves.

WaeWae says “Come put up your feet and take in the day steady as it comes. Soak up the sun, the scenery, or the simple act of doing absolutely nothing. With no places to go, no people to see, you’re free to just be.”
