Texas Students Skype with Shamu

We’re on the road again! Each year in the early spring, the SeaWorld San Antonio Marketing, Animal Ambassador, and Education Departments travel to several of our neighboring communities to spread the word about what’s new in our park for the upcoming year. While we’re in town, we also takethe opportunity to share our animals and their stories with schools.

Last year we introduced our new outreach program, SeaWorld Cares, which focuses on coastal conservation, rescue and rehabilitation of animals affected by both natural and human causes, and how everyone, especially children, can work to make a positive difference in habitats around the world. The program is so much fun, and includes not only our favorite animal rescue stories, but opportunities for the students to meet some of our animal ambassadors, including Padre, the roseate spoonbill, and Pete and Penny the Magellanic penguins.

We love sharing the animals with the students, and this year, we found a way to bring Shamu along with us! With the help from our team members in Entertainment, IT, and a little bit of technology, we can now “Skype with Shamu”– and ohmygosh it is so AWESOME! Take a look at this video of Shamu Trainer Katie, introducing Shamu to the students at Carroll Peak Elementary School in Fort Worth last week:

How much fun is that?!

As you can see, the students absolutely loved getting to meet and interact with the killer whales. It was so amazing to see their excitement, as many of them had never been to SeaWorld before. Imagine being able to talk to Shamu from school! It’s times like these that I really appreciate how cool my job is, and how much I love sharing these animals with people in so many different ways.

Want to keep up with what Shamu is doing from your home computer? Check out the SeaWorld San Diego Shamu Cam, and watch the killer whales swim and play any time you want to join in the fun.

We’re traveling to Houston tomorrow and Austin next week, so if you’re in the area, keep track of where we’ll be on our Facebook page. We hope to see you there!
